The Intervention Convention deals with the need to protect the interests of coastal States directly affected or threatened by the consequences of a maritime casualty which might result in oil pollution of the sea or coastlines. Regulation 37 of MARPOL Annex I requires that oil tankers of 150 gross tonnage and above and all ships of 400 gross tonnage and above carry an approved Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP).
